A toaster draws a lot of power, about 1,000 W according to DuroMax's generator sizing guide, but only for the few minutes it takes to brown the bread. That makes it one of the cheapest appliances to run day to day, and one of the trickier ones to run from a small power station, because of that high draw while it's on.

Check the label under your toaster: four-slice models often list a higher wattage. Choose "I know its watts" in the calculator and type it in.

How to cut the cost of running your toaster

  1. Toast in one batch

Four slices at once uses less than two rounds of two.

  2. Don't go darker than you like

A darker setting keeps it on for longer.

What can power it

It has no start-up surge: DuroMax's generator sizing guide lists no extra power at start-up for a toaster. A generator or power station needs to supply its running power, about 1,000 W for the option above, plus anything else running at the same time.

Check a specific setup with the generator size calculator.
